Beginner's Guides: Is a Skiing Holiday a Good Idea?

We understand the apprehension some people have if they’ve never been skiing before. Any new activity can be daunting before you do it and realise how much fun it actually is! So, if you think you’re too old, not fit enough, don’t think you have the budget or you’re worried about the kids, we’re here to put your mind at ease by detangling some long-standing ski myths and show you why skiing is a great holiday choice.

1: It's Cheaper Than You're Thinking

1: It's Cheaper Than You're Thinking

One of the main reasons we hear people are put off from a skiing holiday is the myth that you’ll have to pay a lot for it. That’s simply not the case. With accommodation, flight prices and holiday budget similar (if not cheaper) than some alternative holiday options, you can book easy knowing that a skiing holiday won’t freeze your account.

Of course, there are resorts to suit all types of budgets, but here at Hucksters, we pride ourselves on providing comfortable and quality accommodation at affordable prices. That’s because we want everyone to come and join us! Our chalets are half-board with hot breakfasts, afternoon teas and three courses in the evenings with a drink, all available on six nights. What’s more, we arrange evening entertainment at our Vallandry and Serre Chevalier chalets. You can also book equipment if required to save on the costs of buying it at retail price.

2: You Don't Need to Know How to Ski Before Going

Everybody starts as a beginner. There’s no better place for you to learn this new skill than at a destination explicitly designed for the sport. You won’t get much hands-on experience from the internet or in books; the slopes are where you really learn to ski! It’s here, with us, that you’ll feel that sense of achievement once you’ve mastered the skis.

Beginners can benefit from lessons to learn how to ski (a few practices make perfect before heading to the slopes!). These lessons will be personalised to your requirements, including the kids, which should hopefully take some nerves off. Ski instructors will make sure each member of your group is equipped and ready before attempting any slopes. And if you find a new love for the sport, you may consider coming back year after year to perfect your skills.

3: You Don't Need to be Super Fit to Ski

Another myth that's circulating is that you need to be at your physical prime to ski – this simply isn’t the case! Skiing is an inclusive hobby that everyone can enjoy, regardless of age, skill or fitness level.

We’ve highlighted how skiing is such a great workout and the health benefits you can enjoy, but to summarise skiing – it’s a workout so fun you don’t even know you’re working out! You don’t need to be great at tricks to benefit from this sport.

If you have a special enquiry about your suitability to skiing, get in touch with us today, and we’d be sure to advise you.

4: You Can Only Ski on a Skiing Holiday

We think there’s a lot of worries, for parents especially, that a skiing holiday could get boring after a while. Being up in the mountains doesn’t mean you’re isolated, but even in the ski resorts themselves, there is plenty to keep visitors occupied around the clock. Lazy mornings or afternoons can be spent browsing the shops of the charismatic ski towns or taking walks through beautiful scenery. Some ski resorts have creche facilities where organised activities are arranged.

Many resorts, like ours, are facilitated with evening entertainment. What’s more, the host of pubs and places to dine are sure to keep you occupied in the evening.

From our Serre Chevalier resort, for example, you are a stone’s throw away from Monetier, which is known internationally for its thermal baths. You can also visit Briancon, which is renowned as a wonderfully-preserved medieval city with regular markets and plenty to see. Just perfect for any photographers, historians or cultural-lovers amongst you!

We assist our customers to arrange day trips to suit their preferences, so if you want to know more about the types of activities you can plan on a skiing holiday, get in touch and we’d be happy to help.

5: You Have to Go as a Group Else it Won't Be Fun

5: You Have to Go as a Group Else it Won't Be Fun

Skiing could hold the title for the most social sport. Regardless if you come as a group or as a couple or single, there are plenty of friends to be found when you stay in a resort. Communal areas make for opportune places to start up a conversation with a stranger. And then there’s the pub. The great thing is you’ll always have something in common. Advanced skiers are always up for handing out tips to beginners, and from there, the conversation just keeps on flowing.

By dispensing with things such as towels and complimentary toiletries (bring your own) and guaranteed en suite bathrooms, Hucksters has managed to create accommodation that is definitely communal and cheap but in that no-frills way that makes you feel pretty smug at the money you are saving. We just wanted to say, we had the most marvellous time in the Mont Blanc recently. We were very happy in the Petit Mont Blanc Annexe & the staff were absolutely fantastic. They all went out of their way to ensure we had a fantastic holiday.
